Aloo Bhorta ~ Bangladeshi Comfort Food Recipe
A Bangladeshi version of mashed potato with garlicky flavor served as a side dish with rice.

I am here with a recipe for Aloo Bhorta for this month’s Muslim Food Bloggers Challenge with the theme of ‘Bangladeshi Cuisine’. I really had no idea of the recipe I wanted to prepare, as we rarely think of going out of the way and preparing a dish that we have not even tasted much. Before selecting any recipe for my blog, I always keep my readers in mind who expect an easy recipe with all the ingredients that are easily accessible. I scanned through a number of recipes and then stumbled upon Aloo Bhorta which is known to be Bangladeshi comfort food.

Aloo Bhorta resembles a lot with Aloo Bhujia or Paliya which is served along with a Masala Dosa. Apparently, Aloo Bhorta is served as a side dish along with rice and curry. I had never tasted this dish anytime before, but the reason I got hooked on it was mainly due to my niece Faiza. This was when she happened to taste a Hyderabadi version of this dish called Alu Ka Bharta in a wedding buffet. The way she described the dish I could assume that it was a simple and flavorful mashed potato dish with minimal spices.
If you really want to relish the Bangladeshi Aloo Bhorta, do not skip the mustard oil. Mustard oil is a primary ingredient in most Bengali dishes, be it fish seafood, meat, chicken, or vegetables. I also liked the garlicky flavor in Aloo Bhorta with fiery red chilies and the crunch from the raw onion.
